"The best things in life are free. The second best are very, very expensive."

"

#1: laugh. god, just laugh. when you find something funny, laugh at it. it’s five seconds actual literal pure joy. why the heck would you ever pass that up?

#2: sign yourself up for every extra-curricular you can. forget that it’s for college or uni applications, or that it’ll look good on your cv. use them to find something new to care about and put your effort into. if it’s not for you, take the time to just watch the people that it is for. see how much something they love can set them alight. keep trying to find something that’ll do the same for you.

#3: exercise. go to the gym, if you can. if you can’t, go swimming. if you can’t do that, go running. if you don’t like running, go for a walk. play football with your mates, or basketball, or tennis. exercise gives you endorphins. endorphins make you happy. (happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. they just don’t.)

#4: take the risk. whatever it is, do it. you don’t know how long it’ll be until you have the same opportunity. everyone fears failure. what makes you better than everyone is your ability to flip failure your middle finger.

#5: don’t sit around waiting for change: be the change. if you think your school needs more water fountains, be the person who signs up for school council and tells them about it at a meeting.

#6: drink water. everything’s better when you’re hydrated.

#7: if it’s between the tear-jerker and the comedy on netflix, go for the comedy. there’s so much to cry about in life, and you don’t need a film to point it out. the comedy’ll show you there’s still stuff to laugh over.

#8: be kind. be gentle. be honest. life is bitter and harsh and horrible enough, and it takes someone special to bring out the better parts of it. be that person. people will love you for it, and you’ll love you for it too.

#9: when people mock you for being enthusiastic about something, ignore them. they’ll spend their lives looking for the same passion you have.

#10: work for the straight as in class. it’s not a sin to get a b, but god, you will feel amazing with those grades. be as intelligent and imaginative as you were made to be. fulfil your potential. don’t be afraid to work hard.

#11: if you want to change yourself, do it. get the haircut. put on the make-up. swap your glasses for contacts. if what you want is sensible and reasonable and attainable, go for it. there is no shame in changing yourself and being proud of what you become.

#12: when you’re angry, be angry. feel it. do something with it. let it push you into making a change, or talking to people, or making something beautiful. but don’t lock it up. it’ll turn into bitterness.

#13: tell yourself you’re great every day. one morning you’ll wake up and believe it.

"If you end up with a boring miserable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your priest, or some guy on television telling you how to do your shit, then you deserve it."

"Loving someone who cannot love you the same way in return is not weakness. It’s one of the most courageous things you’ll ever do. You are putting your armour at their feet and you are saying ‘I will not fight you in this. I have loved you and that means that I have already won.’"
"You think ‘Okay, I get it, I’m prepared for the worst’, but you hold out that small hope, see, and that’s what fucks you up. That’s what kills you."

"You see, I’ve written a million poems, hoping that somehow, maybe some way, you’ll jump out of the page and be closer to me because if you were here, right now, I would massage your back until your skin sings songs that your lips don’t even know the words to."

"Storytelling Is Serious Business. Treat it with respect and a little bit of reverence. Storytelling is what makes the world go around. Even math is a kind of story (though, let’s be honest, a story with too few space donkeys or dragon marines). Don’t let writing and storytelling be some throwaway thing. Don’t piss it away. It’s really cool stuff. Stories have the power to make people feel. To give a shit. To change their opinions. To change the world."

"Softness is not weakness.
It takes courage to stay delicate
in a world this cruel."

"It’s still you. It’ll be you when you fracture your wrist at 4AM and call me when I have a presentation the next morning. It’ll be you when you ask to drive my new car and crash it into a telephone pole. It’ll be you if we hate each other for a day or a few. And if you break my favourite mug. And if you keep forgetting our anniversary and make it up to me by baking a salty cake. It’ll be you when your dad dies and you stop talking because you don’t know how. It’ll be you when you crawl softly into my open arms. It’ll be you when your mum calls me a “whore” and you jerk your chin and all you say is “no.” It’s you when you’re messy and ill and sweaty. You when you leave the house door unlocked. You when you burp drunkenly into my ear and curl into my side like a baby. It’ll be you when you burn breakfast in bed and then kiss me for five minutes straight. It’ll be you when your hair gets too long and you can’t be bothered to cut it. You when you fall asleep on the sofa with the cat on your chest. You when we fight and turn everything to rubble. You when you put your mouth to my ear and whisper “it’s you. It’s still you.”"

At this point
All I’ll say
Is I give myself to you
All I am
And all I’ll be
All I have
And all I dream
Is in your hands
So take it
And please
I beg you
Make it happen
And keep it safe

To Whoever Is Out There
